We want to be in real shape for next year and we are aware that in two months we cannot achieve the sculpted and defined body that we want. That is why we begin to think about how much time in our days we are going to dedicate to exercising. Most likely, we will consider an imminent solution: the gym. Or as the most modern call it the ‘gym’. By paying a fee of X months you force yourself to go, you don’t have a fixed schedule so you can attend every week as best suits you and also, you have everything you need to get in shape, from group classes to the most complex machines. Cardio fitness is not a comfortable activity to perform; in order to get benefits, one must put in a lot of effort by working on weight and cardio.
We no longer wait until the beginning of the year with those typical new resolutions, we started going to the ‘gym’ in September, to implement exercising as a routine and make it one more task in our day to day. This really is a wonderful and very healthy option. Not only exercising to achieve a sculpted body, but also for health. But the problem is that after September, a month after joining the gym, we started to stop going. Why is this happening? How do we avoid it?
The intention is there, we start the gym with very clear ideas “I’m going to get in shape” we tell ourselves, and at first we even give up plans that our friends or partner propose to us, because they are ‘unhealthy’ like going out to drink or go to dinner and end up consuming a bunch of calories, sugar and saturated fat. Why do we go to the gym if not, no? This can be one of the first mistakes, giving up on your life completely isn’t going to last long unless you really love the gym. It is preferable not to spend all your time in the gym and go little by little, set real goals and follow them.
Maintaining the habit of going to the gym is difficult, but if we have some well-fixed ideas we will be able to reach the next bikini operation more than healthy and with a great body. That we decide to go to the gym is already a merit in itself. Now it’s time to comply and get used to it. Get rid of laziness and get your batteries!
The gym:
The first step is to decide on a gym that suits you. It should be close to your house preferably (or at least somewhere that you usually frequent) so that going to the gym doesn’t take a lot of effort or time, ideally you can walk. It is essential that it adapts to your economy, that you can afford it, otherwise there are numerous options such as doing tables at home or going to public parks with machinery. Another essential point is that you have good professionals, who make you a personalized plan for your goals and motivate you.
The exercise:
The main thing is that you like what you do in the gym, so it is much easier to create the habit. In almost all gyms there are numerous group classes, try if you haven’t done it yet in all of them and find out which one you have more fun with and it doesn’t take an effort to go, not because it doesn’t cost you but because you like what you do. Like the machines and the endless ways to do the weights. Go varying, find the way in which you feel most comfortable, with elastics, weights, isometric, concentric exercises, or classes such as hiits, spinning, zumba… Of the infinity of sports varieties that there are in a gym, surely there are some that goes more than the rest with you, you just have to find it.
Socialize:
As we said before, it is not about changing the gym for your life, but about adapting it to it. Find time to dedicate yourself to the gym, a schedule that is comfortable for you and does not necessarily interrupt your life. This does not mean that you go alone when you have no plans or nothing to do, you have to create the habit and this is what costs the most in the first few months.
Here we are concerned with two aspects, that of not completely giving up your social life for the gym and that of making friends in the gym or going with friends. If you have someone to go to the gym with, it creates a commitment and an obligation. In addition to the fact that when one is demotivated, the other will be there to act as a mother and make you see that your goals are not achieved by magic.
Follow-up and results:
A very common mistake is to only weigh ourselves from time to time and see that we have even gained weight. A follow-up does not consist of weighing yourself, in fact muscle mass weighs more than fat. That is why it is very likely that you will gain weight by going to the gym. But obviously the volume of 70 kg of fat is not the same as that of 70 kg of muscle. The BMI changes, so it is important that we do a follow-up, but that it is adequate. You can track with a BMI weight, taking measurements and normal weight. But it is also very important that you control the evolution beyond the visual, how do you feel? Surely after a month, that class doesn’t cost you as much as the first time and lifting those kilos is no longer an impossible mission. Also focus on that, because it is very important.
Change of routine:
Another thing that will help you to continue creating that habit and not get tired or boring is to change the way you train.
Do not make excuses:
Beat laziness and you will win, as the popular saying goes ‘whoever wants something costs him something’. As we have said before, it is important that you enjoy yourself in the gym, that you have a good time while you make an effort, be it for the company, to improve yourself day by day or for the satisfaction that comes afterward. Look the positive side. The habit is not made alone, so if you can really dedicate even half an hour, don’t waste more time reading and go. The body you want is not achieved lying on the couch. So if you have set a goal, achieve it, visualize the result, your health, your body and how you have achieved it with your own effort and perseverance. Not making excuses is basic to achieve what you want.
